Things to consider when setting up filtering

When setting up your filtering initially, there are various things that need to be considered to ensure your filtering is effective. In the basic form, with no additional modules installed you will need to consider the following:

  • Should all users have the same level of filtering? You may wish to have pupils filtered for example but let staff have unfiltered access. Alternatively, you may wish for teaching staff to have some filters applied but admin staff to have completely unfiltered access.
  • Do you need filtering configuring differently for different VLANs or IP ranges? This will usually be most relevant if you have multiple WIFI networks on different VLANs to IP ranges.
  • Do you need to transparently filter direct connections from computers (this will usually be personal devices that have been brought to site)? This is basically for any computers that do not have the proxy set so would usually get direct unfiltered access. On top of this, you will need to decide whether to transparently filter both HTTP and HTTPS traffic.

There are further things to consider if you have purchased the content filtering module. This module blocks pages based on their content rathar than the URL. Things to consider for this module:

  • Do you want all users content-filtered or just certain users/groups?
  • Do you want all VLANs/IP ranges content filtered?
  • Do you want to transparently content filter sites and if so, do you want to do this for both HTTP and HTTPS?

Precedence will always be happy to help you set up your filtering but would need to know the answers to the above questions before being able to do so.
