 | | | | | | The NetManager is low cost, yet packed with features. Whether you are building a new network from scratch, want to replace an
old email server or simply want to get more out of your network, it is perfect for the task. | | | | | |
Intranet
Now that computers are more prevalent throughout schools and
businesses, they can be an excellent medium for the
dissemination of information. Unlike paper, they do not create
waste and are easier to keep up to date. The NetManager
includes the Apache web server which is used more widely than
every other web server put together. This allows powerful and
fast websites to be set up. For the more advanced, such features
as CGI, PHP and MySQL can be used to create real-time on-line
databases accessible from anywhere.
The site-wide intranet can be administered easily from virtually
any type of computer. There is no limit on the size of your
internal website. If you have a permanent Internet connection,
you can even access your website from elsewhere (for instance,
to read your email from home). You may password-protect areas
to improve security.
In addition to the global intranet service, every user can also
create their own personal web pages. This might simply be a list
of information that they want to be able to access anywhere or
it could be used to share work or simply for fun.
Users
The NetManager allows you to create a virtually unlimited
number of users. So, whether you have 10 or 10,000 users, it is
suitable for your network. Creating a user is a simple web-based
single-stage process. Once created each user will have their own
email, home area and personal webpages. Bulk users can be
added from a CSV file or export from SIMS. There are no per-user
licence costs. User lists can be synchonised with Active Directory
Webmail
Of particular interest to schools is the feature-packed webmail
system. This allows email to be read using any tables-capable
web browser. If you have mixed platforms, you will appreciate
the benefit of a consistent, easy-to-use interface. The ease of use
belies the wealth of sophisticated features. All the features you
expect are included; multiple attachments, address books (both
personal and site-wide), signatures, multiple mail folders, CC: and
BCC: options, sort option, inline attachments, etc. All outbound
mails can be content filtered. The webmail system is also highly
configurable. Features can be turned on or off on a per-user or
per-group basis. For example, attachments could be switched off
for students, troublemakers could be blocked from sending any
mail externally, address books could be switched off for younger
pupils, etc. The webmail system is part of the enhanced email
upgrade.
Windows/MacOS
To a Windows PC, the NetManager will appear to be an NT
server. To a MacOS computer, it will appear to be an Appleshare
server. Combined with more industry standard protocols such as
NFS and FTP, the NetManager is an ideal go-between for use in a
cross-platform environment. A single login identity can be used
anywhere. People used to the Windows and MacOS worlds will
be surprised to learn that there are no per-client licence costs.
